SÖREN SANGKUHL

I specialize in individually designed and customized tattoos in a Japanese-inspired style, characterized by high recognition value and a focus on longevity and aesthetics. With expertise and passion, I create stylish, high-quality, and unique pieces.

My career path

Born in 1977 and raised in the area around Kiel in northern Germany, I came to skateboarding in my early youth and through that, in turn, came into contact with the subcultural music and graffiti scene, which significantly shaped my approach and me. During this time, influenced by board graphics, album artwork, and contemporary poster art, I began to practice drawing autodidactically and with enthusiasm that continues to this day.

Today, my influences range from Japanese printmaking and classical tattooing (horimono), contemporary tattoo culture, and Art Nouveau art to experimental fields of art. I was able to begin tattooing in 1998, halfway through my traditional three-year apprenticeship. Since then, I have strived to continuously develop my technical and artistic skills in order to meet both my own expectations and those of my clients.

After several years of searching and wandering, I finally settled in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 2006, where I founded "Orange Maple Tattoo" 14 years ago, thus becoming fully self-employed. What began as a small street shop with an attached gallery evolved in 2016 into the current private studio in the rural village of Hellbühl. Here, in a calm, home-like atmosphere, I offer custom, authentic tattoos, work on illustrations and graphic design projects, and explore various painting techniques. I look forward to your visit.

Published books

Between 2018 and 2024, I was able to publish three books on different topics with Kintaro Publishing, a well-known publisher in the industry. Each of these books is based on the essential joy of drawing, as well as the drive and conviction to inspire others and deepen their understanding of the approach and composition of the respective subject.

The previous publications (Japanese Flora/2018, The Geometry Behind Snakes And Dragons/2021 and Japanese Flora Vol.II) primarily deal with flowers and other plants, snakes and dragons, as well as the underlying forms and their relationship to each other, which are the subject of Japanese tattoo art.
